Best Breakfast in Cape Town CBD

A local's guide to where to start your day in the city centre — from continental buffets to wood-fired full English, Sunday brunch and the best flat whites on Loop Street.

Cape Town's CBD wakes up early. By 7am the cafés along Loop, Bree and Long Street are pouring their first flat whites and locals are slipping in for a quick eggs benedict before work. If you're new to the city or just looking to break out of your usual spot, here's where breakfast is actually worth getting out of bed for.

What makes a good CBD breakfast spot

The CBD has dozens of places that pour coffee in the morning, but very few do breakfast properly. The ones that do tend to share a few things: a kitchen that opens by 7am (not 9am brunch hours), eggs cooked to order rather than batch-warmed, real bread (not supermarket sliced), and proper speciality coffee from a Cape Town roaster. If you can sit on a pavement table and watch Table Mountain wake up, even better.

Continental buffet breakfast

A continental buffet is the city's quiet weapon — pastries, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit, cereals, yoghurts and unlimited coffee for one set price. At Noah on Loop Street we run a continental buffet every morning that you can pair with à la carte hot dishes from the wood-fired kitchen. It's the easiest way to feed a group of mixed appetites without three separate orders.

Full English & à la carte

For something heartier, the full English is the CBD's reliable workhorse — two eggs your way, bacon, sausage, grilled tomato, mushrooms and sourdough toast. Add a side of wood-fired hash or avocado and you're set until dinner. Eggs benedict, shakshuka and French toast all show up on the better menus around the city.

Sunday brunch in the CBD

Sundays slow down. Brunch is the city's social meal — long tables, bottomless coffee, mimosas, and dishes that sit somewhere between breakfast and lunch. At Noah our Sunday brunch runs from late morning into the afternoon, with shared plates from the wood-fired oven and live atmosphere from the bar.

Coffee that's actually good

Cape Town has one of the best speciality coffee scenes in the southern hemisphere. Look for cafés roasting their own beans or pulling from local roasters like Truth, Origin, Rosetta, Father, Tribe or Quaffee. A proper flat white should be silky, not scalded; the espresso underneath should taste like fruit and caramel, not bitter ash.

Why we built our breakfast menu the way we did

Noah sits at 80 Loop Street, in the heart of the CBD. We open at 7am every day because the city needed a place that takes the first meal seriously — not just an espresso bar with a pastry cabinet. Our wood-fired oven runs all morning, which means the sourdough is fresh, the breakfast pizzas are real, and the roasted vegetables in the shakshuka taste like they should. Sit inside under the warm lighting or take a pavement table when the sun's out.
